SEIDO KARATE
Tauranga, New Zealand
Seido karate is a traditional, Japanese martial art that aims to develop the mind, body and spirit through the practice of karate techniques and meditation.
About Seido Karate
Seido Karate is a traditional Japanese style of karate, founded by ‘Kaicho’ Tadashi Nakamura in 1976. Now a 9th degree black belt, Kaicho is chairman of the World Seido Karate Organization, based in New York City. Over 20,000 students in 17 different countries train in Seido Karate.
Seido is a style of karate open to anyone, regardless of age or ability. With an emphasis on personal, individual development, Seido focuses on the capabilities of each person, encouraging everyone to see where their abilities can take them.
Seido seeks to develop a “non-quitting” or “bushido” spirit in each student. No matter what the obstacle or difficulty – emotional, physical, or financial – we want students to feel that they can overcome it. The sincere practice of karate can impress this idea into the spirit. This is the modern interpretation of the bushido spirit of the samurai.
“My purpose in founding Seido Karate was to show what I feel is the true essence, the kernel of true karate-do: the training of body, mind, and spirit together in order to realize the fullness of human potential.” – Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura
Seido translates as ‘sincere way’ and is based on the three principles of love, respect and obedience. Seido’s emblem is the plum blossom, which is also the Nakamura family emblem.
Through physical training, as well as focusing on the mind and spirit, Seido assists each student to use those principles to find his or her own non-quitting attitude. Seido Karate aims to help students face the challenges that may come their way, and not to feel overcome by setbacks. It also seeks to develop students to be strong contributors to their families and communities.
Seido Karate is particularly strong in New Zealand as two of Kaicho’s co-founders established bases here: Eiko Hanshi Renzie Hanham in Christchurch (www.seidoshibu.co.nz) and the late Eiko Hanshi Andy Barber in Nelson (www.seido.co.nz); both 8th degree black belts.

Sensei Rick Harding
“Whatever your ability or whatever your back-ground Seido Karate has something for everyone. I love the moment when you see students just ‘get it’. The look of achievement on their face is so gratifying. These moments motivate me to keep doing what I do”
Sensei Rick began his Seido Karate training by following in his father Dave’s footsteps as a 10yr old in Palmerston North back in 1978. After a stop-start beginning, Sensei Rick gained his Shodan (1st Dan) in 1989 and has placed top in many national tournaments for both Kata and Kumite (sparring) since.
Sensei Rick regularly trains at the dojos across New Zealand to ensure Tauranga club is current. He has also trained in Sydney, Florence, New York, Maryland and Philadelphia.
